Building More Than Wealth: How Orens Capital Rings in the Year of the Fire Horse

When the skies above Melbourne threatened rain on the morning of Orens Capital’s Chinese New Year gathering, CEO Jimmy Zhang took it as a test of sorts. By the time sixty investors gathered on the open lawns with champion racehorses as their hosts, the clouds had parted. For those who know Jimmy, it came as little surprise.

“The weather turned,” he said with a smile, “because of the good energy everyone of you brings.”

It was a fitting beginning to an afternoon that was less about deal flow and more about something harder to quantify — the kind of trust and connection that underpins every great long-term investment.

A Champion Horse Named Silver Bullet

The centrepiece of the afternoon was a champion racehorse named Silver Bullet — co-owned by a syndicate of Orens Capital investors. The name refers to a highly effective solution: precise, fast, decisive. It is, intentionally, a metaphor for the firm’s investment philosophy.

But the horse was more than symbolism. It was a living, breathing example of what Orens Capital is building: a group of investors who don’t just share capital, but share experiences, decisions, and wins. Co-ownership of a champion thoroughbred is, in its own way, a microcosm of co-investing in land.

“We are building up a community rather than a business.”

— Jimmy Zhang, Founder & CEO, Orens Capital

Long-Termism as a Way of Life

In his address to guests, Jimmy was candid about what distinguishes Orens Capital from other investment vehicles. It is not simply access to Australia’s greenfield land market — though that is the firm’s core expertise, built over more than two decades of experience in mid- to large-scale land development.

It is the conviction that wealth, at its most enduring, is a communal endeavour.

“Our vision is not only to offer quality opportunities to invest in Australian land,” Jimmy told the room. “It is to build an investor community — where people connect, share information, co-invest, and together create assets that carry wealth across generations.”

That philosophy — long-termism not as a strategy but as a value — ran through every element of the afternoon. The outdoor setting, the shared meal, the relaxed formality: all of it was designed to let people encounter each other as people first, investors second.

Lessons from the Racetrack

Champion trainer Charlotte Littlefield delivered the afternoon’s keynote — a masterclass on what it takes to produce a winning horse and the unexpected parallels to building a resilient investment portfolio.

She spoke of training, strategy, and mindset. Of the invisible work that happens far from the grandstand. Of the daily discipline that race-day glory obscures.

“Champions are made not on race day, but in the daily grind and the pursuit of perfection in every detail.”

— Charlotte Littlefield, Champion Trainer

Guests were then invited into the private stables — a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the routines, rituals, and relentless attention that produce champions. It was a quiet, powerful reminder: the glory of the race is won in the everyday.

It is a principle that Orens Capital has applied to greenfield land for over twenty years. Sourcing the right parcels. Managing risk through expertise and robust financial structures. Staying patient when others reach for short-term returns.

Sixty Lanterns, Sixty Futures

As the lunch drew to a close, each of the sixty guests opened a personalised lantern — 3D-printed, hand-selected — containing a unique message chosen just for them by the Orens Capital team. The gesture was small. The sentiment was not.

One message shared by the investor, perhaps more than any other, captured the spirit of the day:

“Great journeys begin the moment you stop hesitating.”

For Orens Capital, 2026 is not simply another year. It is the Year of the Fire Horse — a year that, in Chinese tradition, carries energy, boldness, and the spirit of forward momentum. It is, the team believes, a year built for those who think in decades.

An Open Invitation

Orens Capital specialises in Australia’s largest residential development market: greenfield land. With over twenty years of frontline experience in mid-to-large scale land development, the firm identifies and manages risk with institutional rigour — while maintaining the intimacy and trust of a community-first approach.
